When Disagreement in Our Marriage Takes a Back Seat

They had been fighting for several weeks and the distance between them was growing daily. Now they were not talking at all, and neither were they sleeping together. It seemed the conflict was only growing worse and neither of them had the secret to change what was happening between them.

In the third week of this unresolved struggle, he was riding his motorcycle to work early in the morning when another driver didn’t see him and cut him off. There was no avoiding this one and an imprint of his body and helmet would remain on the left side of the “at fault” driver’s van. From the impact moment it all became foggy to him as he attempted to gather himself from the hard concrete road. Other drivers rushed to his side as a nurse heading to her hospital job attended to his physical injuries.

The phone call came to her from the state police. She would hurry to his side and take him to the hospital to be examined and x-rayed.

There were no harsh words, no looks of distain, and no arguing between them. None of that mattered now. The life of her husband was more important than any three weeklong arguments regardless of what they were about. Her only thought? “What am I going to find on the scene and will he be okay?” She prayed feverishly–as if his life weighed in the balance.

Most marriage fights begin with small irritants and unfortunately the argument can become more severe than the irritant. Your feelings are hurt and you’re wondering if he has feelings. My friend shared with me, “Nothing we face through disagreement matters when your husband’s life is in danger. That accident really put things into perspective for me. Maybe it’s not all resolved, but we’re back on track because we realize we love each other so deeply that any difference we had has taken a back seat to life and health.”

You and your spouse are on the same team regardless of how far apart you may feel at times. Humble yourself and take a step of peace toward one another. Reaffirm your love and realize you don’t have to agree with each other all the time and it’s ok.
